Ballerina

February 1st. 2010 | 0 comments - be the first!

Now, I am not usually a pink kind of girl. But the graceful Metropolitan Opera posters I keep seeing make me wish I was a dancer, pink tutu and all. And the figure skating championships made me want to be an ice skater– I think I just want to prance around in a beautiful costume!

Even if you’re not a “girly-girl” your wedding is perfect excuse to try a straight up feminine look. Pink satin and lace are old-fashioned, but modern silhouettes make them fresh. Antique bowls full of peonies and garden roses are a delicate twist on centerpieces. And your flower girls will thank you for getting to be prima ballerina for a day.

Starry Night

January 31st. 2010 | 2 comments

“You are my lucky star…”

One of my favorite old musicals is Singin’ in the Rain, and Lucky Star is such a lovely song. And on your wedding day you’re bound to leave them starstruck! This is a sweet, glamourous look that can work to transform a ballroom or, with a clear tent, remind your guests of the constellations above them. Silver and sparkly touches are glitzy, but posh. A metallic invitation suite would be the perfect way to tie it all together.

Boy Meets Girl

January 26th. 2010 | 0 comments - be the first!

Boy meets girl, blue introduced to pink. I won’t say much more, but it’s bright and girly, and I love it!

Airmail!

Liz Ham’s fun photo and this gorgeous dress from Timeless Vixen Vintage steal the show! I love the mix of blues and lavender. This would be a great look for a bridal shower, perhaps a talented friend could make the blueberry cake! (If so, please freeze a piece and mail to me priority!)

Swadley kobernik19

Hello all VA/DC/MD brides,

If you’ve followed my blog you already know that my mom passed away in November, and that we’re still getting married in May. However, we’ve cut our wedding budget in half. And I can no longer have our talented photographers, Lori and Jon Swadley, for our big day ( They now have May 15th open, or any other day in May besides the 29th! Check out their website/blog http://www.swadleystudio.com. They are really sweet, and I would love to match them up with a new couple. They just won the 2010 Bride’s Choice Awards from Weddingwire.com, making them in the top 5% of wedding vendors!

**You can email Lori at lori@swadleystudio.com or call 540.336.5651**

Thank you ladies!

Rose, Aqua, Pear

Now, I have to say that I love this color combination. It’s so fresh and spring-y, but the colors are more vibrant (and less cliche) than the usual pastels. But it was so hard to find photos of what I had in my head! I’m still not totally satisfied, I might edit this later. French macarons, full garden roses, soft pashminas, pear name “cards” and feminine touches make for a beautiful celebration!

Honey Baby

January 14th. 2010 | 0 comments - be the first!

It is cold. Granted, not as cold as say, negative degree weather in Chicago or Boston, but quite chilly nonetheless. And then I came across a folder on my iBook I had forgotten, and it was like a ray of warm sunshine! Buttery yellow and honey tones are so inviting and cheerful, plus they look great on every skin tone (exhibit A, middle row right). I think the key is varying the depth of the color for each woman. You can give honey as favors, have cute bee and beehive illustrations (”meant to bee together”), use honey in the cocktails and food, honeycomb patterns- so many cute details!

The Scientist’s Wife

January 12th. 2010 | 0 comments - be the first!

I was thinking of Charles Darwin and his fictional fiance when I made this board. (He was married, but this is my take on what it would look like today.) They both have a love of science and nature, so I picture lots of found objects, love letters from while he was in the Galapagos, assorted terrariums, test tube centerpieces, worn books and journals, and naturally-styled florals. This would be perfect for the couple trying to mix their naturalist sensibilities with the prone-to-excessive-girlieness wedding industry (hey, let’s be honest here!).

Jars and Bottles

January 8th. 2010 | 0 comments - be the first!

Here’s a collection of found/recycled jars and bottles that are the inspiration for our centerpieces. So far I’ve got a few spaghetti jars, two Martinelli apple cider jugs, and a jar with a latch lid. I’m trying to support our local dairy by paying a little extra for milk and getting to keep the cute glass bottle. Their chocolate milk is soooo good!

How cute are the salt and pepper shaker bud vases? My goal is 36 containers, 3 for 12 tables, and I’m probably going to buy a flat of Bell jars to round things out. We’re really good about recycling, so this comes naturally, but it’s a great way to save on your flowers. You already enjoyed that strawberry Bonne Maman/sweet basil marinara/heavy cream and now you’ve got a vase at no extra cost!

The Friendliest Flower

December 29th. 2009 | 4 comments

Meg Ryan in “You’ve Got Mail” asks Tom Hank’s character “Don’t you think daisies are the friendliest flower?” And I have to agree with her. Yellow and white are very light and cheerful, perfect for a I-can’t-stop-smiling-even-if-I-wanted-to bride and groom.

I recently sniffed Daisy in Lord and Taylor and thought “Not too shabby, Mr. Jacobs!” I love the bottle, which makes me think of a mix of two 60’s images, the daisy-chain wearing hippie and the mod, Twiggy-esque party girl.  So in the board I used country and uptown daisies. The nice thing about the daisy is you can go totally for either side, shabby-chic or mod, plus keep your floral budget pretty small.
